The Singapore American School has received a gift of SGD$20 million (US$15.5 million) from the Saverin family, who were co-founders of Facebook.
According to Bloomberg, school superintendent Tom Boasberg recently said in an email that this is the largest contribution the school has ever received.
A new primary school is now under construction, and the school intends to utilize the donation to build play areas, STEM laboratories, and other upgrades.
Elaine Saverin, who is Saverin’s wife, expressed her hope that the contribution will serve as “a significant and meaningful way for our family to demonstrate our commitment to the school.”
Saverin abandoned his U.S. citizenship two years after relocating to Singapore from the United States in 2009.
The majority of his fortune—more than $30 billion—comes from his investments in Meta Platforms. Because to the meteoric growth in Meta share price, his fortune has increased by 57% this year.
Established in 1956, the Singapore American School is located in the Woodlands region of the northern part of the city-state and serves around 4,000 pupils.
