Major FaceID Upgrade Expected for iPhone 16 Pro

The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models are anticipated to feature a significant enhancement to the FaceID system, utilizing an advanced ultra-thin metalens.

FaceID, Apple’s facial recognition security technology, relies on the TrueDepth camera and the front-facing camera of the iPhone. According to DigiTimes, the new iPhone 16 Pro models will replace the traditional lenses with innovative metalens technology.

Major FaceID Upgrade Expected for iPhone 16 Pro

Traditional camera lenses typically consist of multiple lens elements, making them bulky and heavy. In contrast, metalens is designed to be thinner and lighter, which allows for a more compact camera design without compromising image quality. Sources have previously indicated that metalens, developed by Apple’s partners ViesEra and Asia Optical, is also expected to be integrated into the upcoming Apple Glass augmented reality devices.

The primary advantage of metalens lies in its ultra-compact size and its ability to capture polarized light, enabling image recognition with minimal distortion. This technological advancement brings Apple closer to embedding FaceID directly under the screen.

The iPhone 16 series is rumored to be unveiled on September 10 at Apple’s headquarters in Apple Park. This new generation of iPhones may feature a dedicated shutter button with force-sensing technology on the right side. Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are expected to come with larger displays, the powerful A18 Pro chip, enhanced camera systems, support for Wi-Fi 7 and 5G Advance connectivity, and an innovative graphene cooling system.
